This page explains to students in the Linguistics 1 Honors section how to access and edit their Honors Project web sites.
If you know how to create web-deliverable materials (text pages, pictures, sounds, etc.), you can go to work. Just create the materials on your computer, then follow the steps below to upload your materials to your web site.
NOTE: Your "starting file" (your "home page", the file that people visiting your site will see first) MUST be named index.html. You can name any other files on your site whatever you find convenient.
If you do NOT know how to create web-deliverable material, see some basic instructions to get you started by clicking on the link below.
The information uses NetScape Composer as its reference point because Composer is free and available to anyone who has access to the WWW. If the computer you use has NetScape available as its browser, it probably already has Composer available. There are other free "html editors" (programs which can create web-deliverable pages) which you can download from the WWW, and there are several powerful editors which you can buy.
Go to e-campus page for Linguistics 1, Fall Quarter 2001. (You can go there by clicking on the link immediately below, but you may want to read the rest of the page first!.)
Log in by typing your 9-digit student id as you log in id and the last four digits of your Social Security number as your password. You can change your password--you may have already done so. For your Honors site, the important part is your student id, because it is on the basis of this number that you are assigned to a particular language group for creating your website.
Click on the "Honors Web Sites" icon, which looks like this:
You will see a page with a list of Student Presentation groups that looks something like that below (in the 2001 version of ecampus, the appearance is a little different, but the links are all the same):
Visiting sites: You can visit sites that have an active link in the "Project" column, e.g. "Catalan.html" in the example here is active (the others that you can see in the example are not active).
Editing your site: If your login id matches one of the Groups, you will see a little "EDIT" box next to the group name, as for the "Catalan" group above.
If the "EDIT" box for your Group is visible and you want to edit your site, click the "EDIT" box. This will take you to a page that looks something like that below.

To upload files from you computer, follow Step 4 and Step 5 above. On the screen in Step 4, under File Options, check "Upload File" and click Go. You will see a screen like that below:

Click the "Browse" button, and you will see a dialog box showing files on your own computer. Select the file you want from your computer, then click the "Upload" button. The file will upload to the server and will appear in the list of files exemplified in Step 5.
Recommendation: If you have a sound or a video file that is relatively large, try to upload it from a computer that is hooked directly to the campus network. I tried uploading a sound file from home, using a modem, and it was taking so long that I gave up!
You can view your site to see that your links work, your pictures appear, and so forth. At the top of the page you should see the phrase "Honors Web Sites". This is a link back to the page in Step 4. Go to that page and click the link for your site under "Project".
