This article is the written text of a talk given at the 1992 Seoul International Conference on Linguistics. As a theme for a survey of contemporary phonological theory, the article considers the possibility that quite a bit of what is taught in classical undergraduate phonological courses is incorrect in serious ways. In particular, many rules taught as categorical phonology are probably rules of phonetic implementation, and others relate listed lexical items rather than deriving forms productively.
