I first became interested in linguistics by studying Latin
at the summer program CTY, in the
summer after my 8th grade schoolyear. (However, I had already taken
Spanish language by then, and knew already that languages were my
favorite subject.) The TA for that course knew not only about Latin,
but a little about Indo-European historical linguistics. From there, I
continued to read on my own about linguistics, while continuing to
study Latin at high school, and also picking up French. Finally, I
decided to apply to Upenn to be
a major in linguistics, at the
time specializing in historical linguistics, but gradually discovering
theoretical phonology, and later theoretical syntax and semantics as
well.
I have also been a TA for CTY courses, in Latin
and in Etymologies.
Teaching such bright young students the subjects that fascinate me is a
unique experience, very different from teaching college courses, and it
left me with lasting enthusiasm for teaching linguistics and
linguistics-related subjects to students of all different backgrounds.
