Features:
This program lets you enter and plot formant pairs (F1, F2) for an unlimited number of vowels.
JPlotFormants should run on any Java-enabled platform (PC running Windows, Macintosh OS X, Solaris, Linux/Unix, etc.)
The plot parameters are entirely customizable (size, grid, dots/symbols, color/black and white, etc.)
The plot can be saved as a picture (JPG) file for use in your word processor, webpage, posters, etc.
The plot can be printed directly from the program.
The program contains a fully-featured formant pair editor to enter your formant pair easily.
This program is freeware and can be freely used by anybody who cares to.
The only restriction is that you should not distribute the program, but instead distribute a link to this page.
System requirements:
You must have a recent (1.2 or newer) Java runtime environment installed on
your computer to run this program. If you don't have one, you can download it
here (Windows, Solaris, Linux) or
here (Macintosh).
Macintosh computers running MacOS X (10.x) should be able to run the program as-is.
If the Mac link doesn't work, go to the Apple
site and click on "Download" in the gray box entitled "MRJ 2.2.x" on the
right hand side. You will also need the swing classes, which are included in the
MacOS X version of Java, but may not be in earlier versions.
Instructions:
Extract the .zip file into the folder of your choice. It comes with a sample
file (sample.for).
If your system is set up properly with the Java runtime environment to run
.jar files automatically, you should be able to double click on the .jar file to run the program.
Otherwise, Windows users can double click on the JPlotFormants.bat file.
Mac users running Mac OS X (10) should be able to double click on the .jar file to run the program.
Mac users running Mac OS 8.x or 9.x are on their own for now. This link might help.
Notes:
The plot axes are in Hz. Conversion to Bark coming soon.
Support for original Plot Formants files will be included soon, as well as
a file format converter to use Plot Formants files with this program and JPlotFormants
files with Plot Formants.
Source code is available if you ask me (rogthefrog - at - mindspring - dot - com).
Thanks in advance for any feedback you may be able to provide (rogthefrog - at - mindspring - dot - com).
