UCLA Linguistics Department Graduate Program
The Linguistics Department is happy to welcome visiting students from other institutions (US as well as foreign). Education Abroad Program (EAP) exchange students must apply to our program through the relevant EAP offices (see below for details). Other exchange students apply directly to the Director of Graduate Studies, Department of Linguistics, UCLA. Please see below for the materials that applicants need to include along with their application. We do not provide financial support for exchange students (the support may come from EAP, some independent funding agency/institution, or from personal sources). The Department reviews each applicant file carefully and makes decisions about which students the department can accommodate. Our decisions are based on the qualifications and research interests of the applicants as well as our departmental resources.
Visiting students have access to many of the facilities that are available to our regular students. They can attend various courses/seminars being offered in the department during their visit. They also have access to the general university facilities including the library and the UCLA recreation center (a membership fee is charged by the recreation center). We also have lounge space within the department that the visiting students are welcome to use.
If the major reason for your visit to UCLA is to get an opportunity to work with a particular faculty member, please indicate so in your application. In such cases, you are strongly encouraged to get in touch with the relevant faculty to see if they will be available for individual consultation with you during your visit to UCLA.
For EAP support issues and visa issues, applicants should inquire at their university's study abroad office. The Director of Graduate Studies and the Student Affairs Officer can answer academic questions relating to our program.
If you attend a university with which the Education Abroad Program has an exchange, please inquire at your university's study abroad office for further details. The Director of Graduate Studies will be happy to assist students with the relevant application information and also help coordinate matters with the relevant EAP offices. You are encouraged to get in touch with the DGS once you know that your university is covered under the University of California EAP program. All EAP applications for foreign students have to be submitted through and processed by their own universities but we will attempt to assist you in contacting the relevant EAP offices. If you do not attend a university that has an agreement with EAP, you should speak to your university's study abroad office about other options or contact UCLA Admissions (for degree study), UCLA Extension (for short term study) or UCLA Summer Sessions (for summer study)-- please see links below for more information.
