Renovation Project

Overview

The Linguistics Department here on the second and third floors of Campbell Hall is currently undergoing a massive renovation.  We are tearing out the old, shabby, grey carpet and replacing it with beautiful bamboo flooring; painting those dull, scuffed, age-worn walls with fresh new colors; and even replacing some old fixtures and furniture.  In just a few months’ time, UCLA Linguistics will have a bright new face.

Process and Timetable

With a project this large-scale, the process can be long and grueling.  We began our renovation adventure in mid-February and expect to see the final product in late-August, early-September.  In order to arrive at this goal, we must pack up everything in all of the department offices and move it to storage.  After everything is out, a demolition team comes in and strips out old carpet, shelving, and other fixtures that have accumulated over the last few decades.  The ceiling crew enters the scene next, replacing our grayed, water stained ceiling with new smooth, white tiles.  Then the painters take over, patching holes and dings along the way.  The last, and probably the most important step, is the flooring installation.  Then, we move everything back.

The Evolution of an Office

Below is a series of “before and after” photos of a typical faculty office:

Until We’re Finished…

…Please pardon our dust!  Things around the department are a bit disheveled these days, but we’re certain it all will be worth it in the end.  Come visit us in the Fall and check out our new look!
